What products can’t be transported across the Ukraine–Poland border
Planning a bus trip to Poland is not simply about finding a comfortable route and buying tickets. For many travellers, it’s just as important to know which products can be brought across the border and which are best left at home. EU customs rules are much different from Ukrainian ones, and being unaware of the laws does not free you of the responsibility for violating them.
Each year, tons of foodstuffs are confiscated — from homemade sausages to cheeses, and passengers receive fines or are banned from entry. To help your journey start without unpleasant surprises, we’ll give you a detailed breakdown of what can be brought across the border, and what is strictly prohibited from transferring across the Polish-Ukrainian border. Remember that Poland is an EU member, which means it adheres to common European health standards. They are designed to protect the internal market from contagious animal and plant diseases. This means that the rules are strict for everyone entering from foreign countries, including Ukraine.
Banned products: what can’t be transported across the Polish border
The strictest restrictions apply to animal products. Meat and meat products, milk, and dairy are absolutely forbidden from import to Poland and other EU countries. This puts some usual Ukrainian foodstuffs under ban:
- Lard of all kinds (cured, smoked, boiled);
- Sausages, hams;
- Cheeses, milk, cream, yogurts, butter, even condensed milk;
- Fresh, frozen and smoked meat;
- Homemade canned food (stewed meat, pates, meat preserves);
- Eggs and egg products.
Even if the products are vacuum-packed, have factory labels or look harmless, the Polish customs officers will confiscate and destroy them. “It’s for personal use” or “it’s a gift for relatives” excuses do not work — the law is the law. Plant products are under less harsh restrictions, but they still have limits. Fruits and vegetables can be transported across the border in small numbers (up to 2-5kg per person), without signs of spoilage, and for personal consumption only. Potatoes, by the way, are under a special, strict ban.
What you can bring along: permitted products
Still, there are plenty of products that can be transported across the border. The main condition is that they must not contain meat or dairy, be in a factory-labeled, intact packaging, and be shelf-stable. Permitted categories include:
- Baked goods, cookies, candy, chocolate;
- Pasta, grain, muesli, breakfast cereals;
- Coffee (up to 500g) and tea (up to 100g);
- Honey (up to 2kg);
- Oil and packaged spices;
- Baby food (up to 5kg) and special dietary foods.
Fish and seafood have special restrictions: you may bring up to 20kg of fish products or one fish weighing above 20kg. Black caviar — no more than 125g without a special permit.
Alcohol and tobacco rules
We should also note how much alcohol can be brought across the border and how many tobacco products you can bring with you. For persons 18 and above, the following products can be brought to Poland duty-free:
- 1L of strong spirits (over 22%);
- Or 2L of fortified wine (up to 22%);
- Or 4L of dry wine;
- Or up to 16L of beer.
As for tobacco, you may take 40 cigarettes (2 packs), 20 cigarillos, 10 cigars, or 50g of tobacco. Going above these norms requires declarations and paying a customs fee.
Liability for violations
- Why should you take the rules of what can be brought to Poland seriously? The consequences can be quite unpleasant. Illegal transportation of banned goods across the border entails:
- Confiscation and destruction of goods;
- A fine ranging from 50 to 1000 Euros, sometimes more; In case of discovery of narcotic substances or particularly large batches of goods, criminal liability;
- An entry ban into European Union countries.
So better double-check your suitcase to not ruin your vacation or business trip.
